How to count thousands in Vietnamese
A detailed guide on counting from 1000 to 999,999 in Vietnamese.
In the last lessons, we've learned that tens is mươi and hundreds is trăm.
We'll take a look at numbers in thousands in this lesson.
Numbers from 1000 to 999,999
The Vietnamese word for thousand is ngàn(South) or nghìn(North). To count hundreds, we add ngàn or nghìn at the end of the number.

Counting Rules
How to say a big number?
For example, we'd like to count 35,505.
Let's break it down: 35505 = 35000 + 500 + 05

When 0 in the tens, we pronounce it as lẻ, while it is không when it's in the hundreds.
- 105 = một trăm lẻ năm.
- 3055 = ba nghìn không trăm năm mươi lăm.
